Delayed Cord Clamping

Delayed cord clamping (DCC) in puppies is often described as a “new-old” practice in dog breeding, and is influenced by advances in human neonatal medicine. It involves waiting for a short period after birth (a few minutes), before clamping and cutting the umbilical cord, rather than doing so immediately. The underlying theory is that the placenta acts as a natural reserve for the newborn, continuing to deliver oxygen-rich blood for a brief time after birth, even as the placenta begins to separate from the uterus.
