How to Sponge Feed a Puppy or Kitten

To use feeding sponges for puppies or kittens

  • Rinse the sponge with water before use.
  • Either use the corner of a latex free sponge or trim the sponge into a nipple shape ensuring no loose bits of sponge are left as these can cause a choking hazard.
  • Dip the sponge in warm formula, then hold it to the puppy or kittens mouth so it can latch and suckle.
  • As the puppy or kitten sucks, carefully squeeze milk from the side of the sponge, being careful to keep the milk out of nostrils to prevent choking.
  • Continue to fill the sponge as the puppy or kitten nurses by either dipping it in warm milk when needed or gently using a syringe of milk to refill the sponge.
  • Always syringe the milk onto the sponge, not the mouth, to prevent choking.

Additional Information

Please rinse sponges with water prior to use. Use a separate sponge for each puppy to prevent cross-contamination. Sponges are disposable and are not designed for re-use.
