Worming Puppies: A Simple Guide for Breeders

Raising a litter is exciting — but it also comes with serious responsibilities, including proper worming. Puppies are born with a high risk of internal parasites, and without early treatment, worms can quickly lead to poor growth, illness or even death.

Whether you're new to breeding or refining your protocol, this guide walks you through the essentials of puppy worming — when to do it, what to use, and how to keep your pups thriving.

Why Are Puppies So Prone to Worms?

Puppies can contract worms:

Before birth, via the placenta

After birth, through the mother’s milk

From the environment, especially in multi-dog homes or outdoor areas

Roundworms and hookworms are the most common threats in the first few weeks. Early and consistent worming is vital.

Puppy Worming Schedule (General Guide)

  • 2 weeks of age – First treatment
  • Every 2 weeks – Until 12 weeks of age
  • Monthly – From 3 to 6 months
  • Every 3 months – From 6 months onward

Also worm the dam at the same intervals — especially during pregnancy and lactation. Ensure the wormer is considered safe for pregnant and lactating bitches such as Milbemax.

Choosing the Right Wormer for Puppies
Always use a wormer:

  • Formulated for puppies
  • Suitable for their age and weight
  • That targets roundworms and hookworms, the most common in neonates

Oral suspensions such as Drontal or very small tablets such as Milbemax for Small Dogs and Puppies are ideal for young pups. Browse our Worming Dog range for recommended options that are safe, effective, and easy to administer.

Tips for Administering Wormers

  • Use a syringe or dropper for liquid wormers
  • Place the dose gently into the side of the pup’s mouth
  • Always weigh each puppy to ensure correct dosing
  • Clean bedding and play areas to avoid reinfection
  • Keep a worming record for each puppy

For added support, combine with nutrition from our Neonate Nutrition Puppy range.

Including Worming Info in Puppy Packs

New owners often aren’t aware of how often to worm. Help them start off right by:

  • Adding a worming chart in each puppy pack
  • Listing the wormer used and next due date
  • Recommending safe products for follow-up doses
