Why Puppy ID Collars Are a Must for Every Litter

Keeping track of a new litter can be surprisingly tricky — especially when you’ve got a bundle of identical wriggly pups! Puppy ID collars are an essential part of whelping and early care, making it easy to monitor feeding, health, and development from birth.

Here’s why every breeder should have a full set ready before the first pup arrives.

1. Track Feeding and Weight Gain
Not all puppies nurse equally, and weaker pups may need extra attention. With ID collars, you can easily track:

  • Which pups are feeding regularly
  • Weight gain patterns
  • Individual responses to top-ups or formula feeds

This is especially important for large litters or when supplement feeding is needed.

2. Identify Health Concerns Early
Clear identification allows you to note changes in:

  • Activity levels
  • Stool consistency
  • Response to medication or supplementation

If a pup shows signs of illness, being able to clearly identify and isolate the issue to a specific puppy is critical. You'll avoid confusion and ensure proper care is given quickly.

3. Helps Future Owners Bond Early
Many breeders share updates with future puppy owners before they take their pup home. By using ID collars:

  • You can refer to puppies by colour (e.g. “Purple Girl” or “Blue Boy”) in photo updates
  • Future families can watch their puppy grow from day one
  • It builds emotional connection before handover day

Some breeders even send the ID collar home as a keepsake!

4. Choose Safe, Adjustable Designs    Choose soft, adjustable ID collars that grow with the pup. We stock a range of collars to choose from including paracord, break-away collars, clip collars with matching leads and Velcro. Because pups grow so quickly you will likely need two sizes. We recommend starting with paracord or velcro collars until about 3 weeks of age and then switching to either the break-away or clip collars until your pups are ready for their new homes.

Make sure to check and adjust the fit daily — puppies grow quickly, and a tight collar can become uncomfortable fast.

5. Use a Full Colour Set
A good ID collar set includes a rainbow of colours so each puppy has a unique identifier. For very large litters, you can double up colours with patterns or stripes. We offer both solid colours as well as patterns so larger litter or multiple litter identification is no problem.

At Oz Fur Kids, we stock full sets that are:

  • Durable and washable
  • Sized for the smallest to the largest of breeds.
  • Colour-coded for easy tracking - transition from one style to another with ease as our colours remain the same.

You can find them under Puppy ID Collars in our store.
