Nail Trimming in Newborn Puppies: When, Why & How
Nail trims might not be the first thing you think about when caring for newborn puppies, but they’re an important part of early hygiene and health. Those tiny claws can grow surprisingly sharp, and they serve more purpose (and potential problems) than you might expect.
Here’s what every breeder or new puppy owner needs to know about neonatal nail care — including when to start, how to do it, and why it matters.
Why Trim Puppy Nails So Early?
Even in the first week of life, puppies have soft but sharp nails. Left untrimmed, they can:
- Scratch and irritate mum’s teats or belly, causing discomfort or wounds
- Tear bedding or get caught in fabric
- Scratch littermates during wriggly feeds or play
- Contribute to misaligned toe or paw development in extreme cases
Keeping them trimmed not only protects mum and the litter, but also gets pups used to handling early on — making life easier for everyone down the track.
When to Start Trimming Puppy Nails
Start as early as 7–10 days of age, once the pups are feeding and growing well. From there, expect to trim their nails about once a week, depending on how quickly they grow.
By 3–4 weeks of age, the nails can become thicker and more curved, making regular trims even more important.
How to Trim Neonate Puppy Nails Safely
You’ll need:
- Small Grip-soft puppy nail clippers
- Styptic powder or gel (just in case you accidently cut a nail and make it bleed)
- A calm, warm environment
- Soft towel to gently restrain the pup
Step-by-step:
- Wash your hands and ensure your clippers are clean.
- Hold the puppy securely but gently in a towel or your lap.
- Press the pad to extend the nail and look for the pink ‘quick’.
- Trim just the tip of the nail — avoid cutting too close to the quick.
- Praise and release the puppy, then repeat on all paws.
Tip: If you're unsure, try using a fine nail file to blunt the tips instead of clipping, until you’re more confident.
How Often Should You Trim?
Weekly trims are ideal for most neonates, especially large litters where puppies may be more active. Pups fed on bottles or formula may also have faster-growing nails due to rapid early growth.
